Recertification
Certification must be renewed on each two-year anniversary of the certification date. Renewal applications should be submitted to the office at least one month prior to the expiration date to ensure timely renewal. Certification is renewable upon completion of an application to the Certification Board that includes a summary of evidence (and supporting documentation) of a minimum of 40 clock hours of continuing education/training obtained during the previous two 2-year period. Continuing education/training should include at least one topic pertaining to the domains of the held credential, which would satisfy a Board requirement that the counselor has maintained his/her competencies of the credential and kept current in the profession. All recertification applications must include a signed Affirmation to reconfirm the applicant’s commitment to follow a professional Code of Ethics. Please contact the MAAP office to obtain a Code of Ethics appropriate to your credential.
- Intern Counselors must renew their internship every twelve months (1 year).
- Certification is renewable upon current and continuous joint membership in MAAP/NAADAC.
- The Board may refuse to act on the application if there is evidence of the individual not meeting the professional code of ethics.
- Recertification may be denied by the Certification Board by independent action or upon recommendation of the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Association of Addiction Professionals with proof of gross violations of the MAAP professional code of ethics.
- An applicant who is denied recertification may appeal to the board for a hearing, at which at least six (6) of the 10 Board members must be present. If applicant is still not satisfied after this hearing, the applicant may appeal to a special Board of five members, which will be appointed for this purpose. This special Board will consist of the President of MAAP or his appointed representative and four (4) other members of MAAP. None of these four temporarily appointed persons may be members of the Certification Board.
- For certifications that have lapsed, the guidelines are as follows: For up to five (5) years lapsed, the applicant must provide evidence of 40 hours’ continuing education for each two-year time period lapsed, pay $75 for each two-year time period lapsed, plus $20 per year. A letter of verification of work status from the applicant’s supervisor must accompany the application. After five years, the applicant must re-apply for certification and re-testing will be up to the discretion of the Certification Board.
Educational Guidelines: The principles for acquiring continuing education/training are as follows:
- Conferences, Workshops, and/or Seminars: 20 hours Minimum
- Employee In-Services: 10 hours Maximum
- Online and/or Correspondence Courses: 10 hours Maximum
Specific recertification requirements for each credential are listed below (requirements subject to change at the discretion of the Certification Board):
CADC, CADC I, CADC II: 40 hours of education/training, which should include topics pertaining to at least one of the AODA domains: Clinical Evaluation; Treatment Planning; Referral; Service Coordination; Counseling; Client, Family, Community Education; Documentation; Professional & Ethical Responsibility. The 40-hour total must include 2 hours in Counselor Ethics Training and 2 hours in HIV/AIDS Update Training.
CCAP: 40 hours of education/training, which should include topics pertaining to at least one of the Advanced AODA domains: Clinical Evaluation; Treatment Planning; Referral; Service Coordination; Counseling; Client, Family & Community Education; Documentation; Professional & Ethical Responsibilities; Research, Design Analysis & Utilization; Clinical Supervision. The 40-hour total must include 2 hours in Counselor Ethics Training and 2 hours in HIV/AIDS Update Training.
APS: 20 hours of prevention education/training which should include topics relating to at least one of the CPS domains (see below). The 20-hour total must include 2 hours in Prevention Ethics and 2 hours in HIV/AIDS Prevention/Update Training.
CPS, & CPM: 40 hours of education/training, which should include topics relating to at least one of the CPS domains: Planning & Evaluation; Education & Skill Development; Community Organization; Public Policy & Environmental Change; Professional Growth & Responsibility. The 40-hour total must include 2 hours in Prevention Ethics and 2 hours in HIV/AIDS Prevention/Update Training.
CCJP: 40 hours of education/training, which should include topics relating to at least one of the CCJP domains: Dynamics of Addiction & Criminal Behavior; Legal, Ethical & Professional Responsibility; Criminal Justice System & Processes; Clinical Evaluation: Screening & Assessment; Treatment Planning; Case Management, Monitoring & Participant Supervision; Counseling ; Documentation. The 40-hour total must include 2 hours in Professional Ethics and 2 hours in HIV/AIDS Update/Training.
