Requirements and application for Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor certification

CADC Application Checklist

To apply for CADC certification, applicants must submit the following:

Application & Eligibility

  • Completed Application & Portfolio Forms
    All required forms must be completed and include applicable applicant and supervisor signatures.

  • Current MAAP Membership
    Membership must be active at the time of application submission.

  • Application Processing Fee
    Must be submitted in accordance with the current fee schedule.


Education & Training

  • Official Transcripts
    Official transcripts must be sent directly from the college or university to MAAP. Applicant-submitted transcripts are not accepted.

  • Education Documentation
    Verification of 300 total education hours, including 6 hours of Ethics specific to Addiction Professionals, documented using the required portfolio forms and aligned with IC&RC domains.


Work Experience & Supervision

  • Resume of Prior Work Experience
    Documented work history in the addiction or related behavioral health field.

  • Supervised Practical Training (SPT) Verification Forms
    Required SPT hours must be documented and verified on approved portfolio forms.

    SPT Hour Requirements:

    • 300 hours – High School Diploma

    • 270 hours – Associate’s Degree

  • Supervisor Evaluation(s)
    Must be completed and submitted directly by the supervisor.

  • Professional Reference Forms (Three Required)
    Must be completed and submitted directly by the references.

  • Board Authorization for Non-MAAP Supervisors (If Applicable)
    Required only when supervision is provided by a supervisor holding a non-MAAP clinical credential. Authorization must be granted by the Certification Examining Board prior to counting supervision hours.


Written Case Study

  • Written Case Study (Required for CADC Applicants)
    A typed case study demonstrating application of the Twelve Core Functions and Global Criteria, completed in the required format and sequence outlined in the Certification Manual. Case studies not meeting mechanical or content requirements will delay review.


Ethics

  • Signed Code of Ethics
    The Code of Ethics must be reviewed in full, dated, and signed.


Document Submission

  • Applicant-Submitted Materials
    All applicant materials must be uploaded as one combined packet through the MAAP Member Portal.

  • Documents Submitted by Original Source
    The following must be emailed directly by the source to Certification@MSAAP.net:

    • Official transcripts

    • Supervisor evaluation(s)

    • Professional reference forms

Applicant-submitted versions of these documents will not be accepted.


Exam Eligibility & Fee Payment

  • Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Examination for CADC certification.

  • Exam authorization is granted after:

    • Certification Examining Board approval, and

    • Payment of the required exam fee.

  • Exam fees may be paid before or after application review but must be received before authorization to test is issued.


Applicants are responsible for reviewing the Certification Manual for complete, credential-specific requirements and instructions.
