Credentialing Requirements (Non-Reciprocal)

Non-reciprocal credentials are valid only in Mississippi and do not qualify for IC&RC reciprocity.

Certified Intern Counselor (CIC)

The Certified Intern Counselor (CIC) credential is designed to:

  • Support employment opportunities in the addiction counseling field

  • Serve as a pathway toward CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) or CAADC (Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor) certification


CIC Credential Duration & Upgrade Requirements

  • The CIC credential may be held for a maximum of four (4) years from the date the examination is passed.

  • The credential is not renewable after the four-year period.

  • Within this timeframe, individuals must complete all requirements for CADC or CAADC certification.

  • CADC and CAADC requirements are outlined in the Certification Manual and the respective application packets.


Certified Intern Counselor (CIC) Requirements

1. Education & Training

  • 192 total hours of education and training focused on the Twelve Core Functions and 46 Global Criteria

  • 6 hours in Ethics, including ethics specific to alcohol and drug counseling

  • Mandatory Ethics Course: Applicants must complete an ethics course specific to Addiction Professionals

2. Code of Ethics

  • Applicants must review, date, and sign the MAAP Code of Ethics, which includes guidelines specific to alcohol and drug counseling practice.

3. Examination

  • Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Examination for ADC or AADC, as applicable.


CIC Recertification Requirements

To maintain the CIC credential during the four-year eligibility period, individuals must complete:

  • 20 hours of continuing education every two (2) years, aligned with IC&RC ADC or AADC competencies

  • Required topics include:

    • 2 hours of Ethics, specific to alcohol and drug counseling

    • 2 hours of Person-Centered Planning

Active MAAP membership is required for recertification. If membership lapses, certification will be suspended until dues are current.

All addiction counseling credentials are grounded in demonstrated competency in the Twelve Core Functions and 46 Global Criteria, including:

  • Screening
  • Intake
  • Orientation
  • Assessment
  • Treatment Planning
  • Counseling (individual, group, and family)
  • Case Management
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Client Education
  • Referral
  • Reports and Recordkeeping
  • Consultation

The TAP 21 Competencies and Twelve Core Functions are integrated throughout MAAP certification domains. The MACT Program addresses all Twelve Core Functions and 46 Global Criteria.


Document Submission

All required documentation must be submitted in accordance with the Certification Manual and application instructions. Applicant-submitted materials are uploaded through the Member Portal, and documents required from third parties must be submitted as directed.
